motd contains the message of the day that
every user sees when they log into the system.
A system administrator normally updates this file
on a regular basis to inform of:
disruptions to the user service
changes to the system hardware or software
times of regular system backups
contents of mounted filesystems
names and telephone numbers of system operators
Display the message of the day at any time while logged
in by typing
pg /etc/motd. Suppress the appearance of the message
using the hushlogin feature described in
login(M).
Examples
NOTE: The system will be shut down at 14:00 (2 PM) today Tuesday
December 4 for installation of a new disk drive. Service
will be restored at 16:00 (4 PM) at the earliest.
GENERAL: The system is not available on Mondays between 08:00
and 10:00 when system backup is performed.
